Thanks for the reviews.  I pushed patches 1, 2, and 4, since you were
happy with them.  I think that this will fix the problem with Windows
VMs.

I didn't push patch 3, since I need to rework it and don't have time for
that at the moment.  I'll do that tomorrow.
